About the Department of Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry at Washington University in St. Louis provides rigorous training in all areas of chemistry at both graduate and undergraduate levels. The program provides a strong foundation in the core areas of chemistry: organic, physical, inorganic, nuclear, theoretical. Special emphases in the department include such emerging interdisciplinary fields as organometallic, bioorganic, biophysical, macromolecular, polymer, environmental, and materials chemistry. Many of our undergraduates further their studies at the best graduate schools in the world. The Department of Chemistry has over 25 full-time faculty, 32 postdocs and numerous research, educational and administrative staff. Spread out over 5 buildings there are shared facilities that include a high-resolution NMR facility, a Mass Spectrometry facility and more. We are proud to have close research ties with many departments in Arts & Sciences, including Physics, Biology, Earth & Planetary Sciences and DBBS, as well as collaborations with the School of Engineering and Washington University School of Medicine.
