TH Help Session: (LGS+KR) 12:00-2:00 in LS 461.
Lectures: MWF 10-11 am, Lab Sciences 250
Office Hours: Prof. Sobotka - LS461, Tu (K) and Th (LGS) 12-2:00 p.m.
Textbook: Thermodynamics, Statistical Mechanics and Kinetics by T. Engel and P. Reid. (ISBN: 0-8053-3842-X)
Course Content: Introduction to Classical Thermodynamics (Thermo.), Statistical Mechanics (SM), Kinetics (Kin.), Transport phenomena (Trans.), and Reaction-Rate Theory (RRT).
Logistics: After presentation of some introductory material, not presented in a concise form in the text, we will follow the text, at a rate of about 1 chapter per week. Lecture notes will be handed out in class. This practice is intended to free your hands and minds to concentrate on the material during the lectures. This practice is also intended to encourage questions as you will not have to worry about writing down every single board scratch. On the completion of each chapter we will go over the conceptual questions (found in your text, just before the problems) in class.
Exams: There will be two midterm exams and a fnal. The midterms will be 7:30-9:00 p.m. in Lab Sciences 250. The material covered by each will also be announced in class before the exam. Exams will consist of conceptual questions (often chosen from those in the text), numerical questions (often chosen from those worked out in the text or assigned) and proofs (also often chosen from those in the text or worked out in class.) Old exams and solutions provided in class and in help sessions. The exam dates are: Midterm 1: 7:30-9:00 p.m., Wed., Feb. 12th, and Midterm 2: 7:30-9:00 p.m., Wed., March 26th. The final exam will be on Monday, May 5th, from 10:30-12:30 p.m.
Quizzes: Two or three short (10 min) in-class quizzes will be given. I will announce them just 1-2 lectures before they are given. These are intended to make sure you keep pace with the material and know what to expect on the exams.
Problem Sets: Problems will be assigned from each chapter but only two problems from each set will be designated for turning in for grading. Each problem will be graded on a 0,1, or 2 point basis (2 = perfect). The solutions will be posted on this website.
