Session 8:

Can you design a new polyolefin polymer and a catalyst to direct its synthesis?

In this module, we have learned how olefin monomers are polymerized on a metal center and how molecular-level interactions play a key role in determining polymer structure. We have seen how chemists can control polymerization reactions through wise choice of reagents, catalysts, and reaction conditions. In fact, chemists have the ability to design and synthesize totally new plastics with desired chemical and physical properties. We hope that this module has left you with a better understanding of, and appreciation for, the kinds of activities that polymer synthesis chemists are actively engaged in.
