Abstract: Molecular dynamics calculations are performed on a simple model of an atomic force microscope probing the liquid-solid interface. The force experienced by the model of the tip is measured, and density profiles of the liquid are obtained. Velocity autocorrelation functions are used to characterize the liquid state near the tip. Oscillations in the force experienced by the tip are observed and explained in terms of liquid packing in the tip-wall cavity.
