The Maurer group in the Department of Chemistry at Washington University conducts research in organic chemistry and chemical biology.  The major focus of the group is the development of new chemical tools to answer questions in biology that are not accessible using traditional biological techniques.  We address these questions using a broad array of tools including molecular biology, cell biology, organic synthesis, surface chemistry and micro/nanofabrication.  Current research efforts in the group are broadly divided into three areas; the development of new surface chemistry, neuronal wiring and bacterial ion channels.
