Jacob Schaefer Research Group

On August 11, 2008, we labeled a water-stressed soybean leaf with 400-ppm 13CO2 and 21% 17O2 (and the balance, N2). The goal was to discover the fate of glycine produced by the oxygenase pathway of Rubisco, ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase. There was 1 liter (STP) of labeling gas purchased from Isotec (Miamisburg, OH) at a cost of $7,000. The labeling lasted 20 minutes. The labeled leaf was frozen, lyophilized, and examined by solid-state NMR.
